This four-piece clay weight (round with a hole) weighs approximately 380g and measures 14 cms in diameter and approx 10 mms thick. Made to fit into the 4 and 5 litre Fido jars, they are made of pure clay, so they are a pure natural product without glaze or dye. The clay, which is fired at a very high temperatures is dense and food-safe. After use the weights should be washed and then dried properly (recommend drying in the sun or oven). Clay weights should never be stored inside a crock.
Anyone who has fermented in a wide jar with a narrower mouth will know that it is difficult to weigh down the vegetable matter properly because of the shape of the jar. These weights will help solve this issue. A cabbage leaf cut to the shape of the Fido jar can be used under the ceramic weights to stop bits of vegetable floating to the top of the brine. These could also be used in a 3 litre Fido jar but will overlap.
